Heather A. Genovese

Psychotherapy & psychoanalysis, MS, LP, LCAT

At it's best, therapy is active and collaborative, and can change lives.

Heather Genovese is a psychotherapist in full time private practice in the Columbus Circle area of Manhattan. Throughout her years of practice, Heather has accumulated knowledge and experience with a variety of patients working from a psychodynamic and in-depth perspective. Working from this perspective allows for the space and time that is necessary to get to know people and to help them understand themselves more deeply to create lasting change.

Heather earned her Master’s degree at the College of New Rochelle, and later completed eight years of post-graduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP) & The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP). In addition to being a licensed Psychoanalyst, she is also trained and licensed as a Creative Arts Therapist and is a trained trauma therapist with a specialization in Dissociation.  Heather has held a committee position at the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) and is an adjunct professor, a certified rape crises counselor, trained in EMDR, and a supervisor to graduate and post- graduate students.  She has been a guest speaker at numerous mental health conferences and institutions giving lectures based on her expertise in psychodynamic psychotherapy and trauma.

Currently, Heather’s private practice work includes working with individuals, couples and adolescents in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Her clinical interests include depression and anxiety; work with trauma, including childhood sexual abuse; change of life issues, with a particular interest in how people form relationships and make decisions around parenthood; issues of sex and gender identity; and relationship and intimacy struggles.

My goal as a clinician is to try to understand each person as an individual with his or her own unique experience in the world. I strive to create an environment that feels comfortable and safe and always confidential so that a patient can say anything that comes to mind and there is no risk of feeling judged.
